"Mending Broken Hearts" - Activity Download
The perfect way to have a discussion about what it means to have Christ-like love.
Tip: Cut the heart out, then cut them along the line in the middle. Read the left side of the broken heart and try to fix the broken heart by finding what someone can do to help heal the broken heart.
Tip: While doing the activity, make connections to real experiences you have had as a family when your heart was broken and someone helped heal it or when you noticed someone needed help and you decided to go and help.
"Heavenly Father's Love" - Jeffery R Holland Quote
"The first great truth of all eternity is that God loves us with all His heart, might, mind, and strength." - Jeffrey R Holland
Place this wonderful quote by Jeffery R. Holland in a place where you can see it, feel it, internalize it. He love us, with ALL his heart, might, mind and strength. That is pretty powerful!
And They Mocked Him: Being Kind Even When It's Hard
People weren’t always kind to Christ. In fact, on what may have been his hardest day on the earth, many people were mean to Jesus, bullying him, teasing him, hurting him and eventually killing him. It was like people were throwing stones at him, and it must have hurt! However, Jesus continued to be an example of pure love and charity.
This activity reviews some of the cruel things people did to Jesus in the hours before he was crucified. Place the picture of Christ on the Cross in the front of the room. Hand out the 6 stones to family or class members. Have each person read what is on the stone and place it around the picture of Christ. Discuss each stone as it is being placed. How must have Jesus felt while he was being treated so poorly? Have we ever been treated that way? How did we feel? Do we ever treat others that way? What are some examples of how we might be unkind to others?
Next, hand out the 6 hearts. Have each person read what is on the heart and choose a stone to cover with the heart. The heart represents ways in which Christ acted with love and kindness even when it was hard. Discuss each heart and ask how the people around Jesus must have felt when he responded with kindness. How do we feel knowing Jesus is ready and willing to treat us with such kindness even when we do something wrong. How can we follow Jesus’s example and show kindness when others around us are being unkind?
We have included two options for the picture of Christ, or you may want to choose your own picture.
To Fulfill All Righteousness. Baptism
Jesus Christ was baptized to “fulfill all righteousness.” Compare Christ’s baptism with your own. Have a family “scribe” write responses on the stars.
Tip: Cut out each of the stars. Place a picture of the Savior and a picture of one of your family members on a magnetic board, (magnet white boards are wonderful for many uses.) Read each star, vocally answer the question then place the star around either the picture of Jesus or the picture of the family member.
Tip: Answer the questions in detail to invoke deeper thinking. “Jesus Christ was baptized by his cousin, John the Baptist. I was baptized by my brother, Daniel Paulson. You will be baptized by your daddy David Fraker. He will be dressed in white, and so will you! All different people, but all holders of the Priesthood.”
Tip: Two color copies and two black and white copies are included so you have the option of using a past tense or a future tense question for yourself “I was baptized by. . .” or “I will be baptized by. . .”
Tip: Young children are often very anxious about being baptized. Consider having your children reverently practice how they will stand, and how they will hold the priesthood holder’s arm and their own nose during their baptism. Have them practice bending their knees as they are immersed and then standing up again.
Tip: Invite family members to meet you at the baptismal font after church the Sunday of this FHE lesson. Talk about things they notice at the font. Show where they will enter and exit the font when they will be baptized. Your wardmission leader may be able to help with this.
